Is Freelance Writing Right for You?
Freelance writing is one of the most accessible ways to earn money as a writer. You don't need a degree, a large audience, or a published book. You need strong writing skills, reliability, and the ability to research and adapt to different topics and tones.
Types of Freelance Writing
Finding Your First Clients
Job Boards
ProBlogger Job Board, Contena, and LinkedIn are excellent starting points. Search for “freelance writer” or “content writer” and filter by your niche.
Cold Pitching
The most effective long-term strategy. Identify companies whose blog you could improve, find the content manager on LinkedIn, and send a short, specific pitch with a sample idea. Follow up once after 5 days.
Content Agencies
Apply to agencies like Verblio, Compose.ly, or WriterAccess. They handle client acquisition so you can focus on writing.
Setting Your Rates
- •Beginners: $0.10–0.15/word ($100–150 per 1,000-word article)
- •Intermediate: $0.20–0.50/word
- •Expert: $0.50–1.00+/word
Never charge less than $0.10/word. If someone offers less, negotiate or walk away. Your time and skill have real value.
Building Your Portfolio
Use Scripio to build your portfolio pieces. Pick 3 niches you're interested in, write 2 sample articles per niche (1,000–1,500 words), and publish them on a simple portfolio site. Link to these when pitching clients.
